What Is The Differences Between Arabica and Robusta?
As a coffee lover, you must be familiar with the words of “Arabica” coffee and “Robusta” coffee, but do you know the difference between the two of them?
Arabica is a coffee that grows in 3000–7000 feet above sea level. Even though the name is Arabica, Arabica actually comes from Ethiopia. However, it is called Arabica because in the 7th century, this coffee was brought to areas in Arabia and became very popular. Even at that time, many housewives used coffee as a medicinal supply at home.
Arabica is still the most popular coffee until today. This is because Arabica have a rich flavor and a lot of tasting notes, depending on where it is grown. In Latin America, most produced coffee have cocoa and spice tasting notes . Meanwhile in Africa, most Arabica coffees have juicy and fresh tasting notes.
Meanwhile, Robusta grows in lower areas, around 200–800 meters above sea level. The name Robusta comes from the word “Robust” which means Strong. This is because Robusta have a bitter and strong taste. The coffee content is also twice stronger than Arabica.
Robusta coffee beans themselves are smaller than Arabica. The plants are also easier to treat because Robusta have a high level of chlorogenic acid and it can be a natural pesticide, so the pests rarely attack. Most Robusta coffee comes from West Africa and the biggest exporter of Robusta comes from Vietnam.
And for the price itself, Arabica is more expensive than Robusta because Arabica is more difficult to treat. However, in terms of acidity, Arabica have a higher acidity level than Robusta.
